Training: Motor Vehicle Collision Investigation

MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION INVESTIGATION ON SCENE COURSE #0101

The Motor Vehicle Collision Investigation - On Scene Course (MVCI-OSC) is a two week, 70 hour program, held Monday thru Friday 8am - 4pm that is designed to prepare an officer to identify, gather and document evidence at an accident scene. This course is for the officer who has at least six months to a year experience on the job. There is a less intense Recruit Accident Investigation Program for academy training purposes.

The officer will be trained to collect data, draw field sketches, measure the scene and draw scale diagrams of the collision scene. There is moderate math computation with calculations to determine initial & ending velocities, drag factor/coefficient of friction, acceleration rates, time, distance, critical curve speeds and radius formulas. Techniques and field sessions to determine grade, drag factor/coefficient of friction and measure vehicle damage are integral components of the course. Officers must complete the course with a grade of 70% to receive a certificate and 80% to go on to the Motor Vehicle Collision Investigation - Advanced Accident Course (MVCI-AAC).

MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION INVESTIGATION ADVANCED COURSE #0102

The MVCI Advanced Course is a two week 70 hour program, held Monday thru Friday 8am - 4pm that prepares an officer to build on the data collected in the MVCI On Scene Course. The officer will be capable of applying mathematical computations to determine speed from skid marks, critical curve speed from yaw marks, speed from vehicles that leave the ground, time and distance analysis and speed calculations based on vector diagraming and momentum analysis.

Vehicle damage analysis, determination of thrust/rotation and vehicle pre/post impact movements will be covered. The development of time/position analysis of collisions and the drawing of diagrams for court are an essential part of the program. Field testing of friction values, yaw motion, and acceleration testing are conducted as well. This course is for the officer who has completed the MVCI-OSC and who will be called upon to issue citations and determine criminal liability based on the analysis of data from the scene. The MVCI- AC is a pre requisite to attend the MVCI Reconstruction Course.

MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION INVESTIGATION RECONSTRUCTION COURSE #0103

This program is a comprehensive two week - 70 hour course, held Monday thru Friday 8am - 4pm. This course deals with the technical procedures of reconstructing motor vehicle collisions. Included topics are: vector diagraming, 360 degree momentum analysis; energy equations; speeds from crush; basic laws of motion related to collisions, occupant kinematics; particulars of collisions involving or in combination with automobiles, pedestrians, motorcycle and commercial vehicles; computer aided technology in friction testing, scene mapping and drawing. The above topics are covered in classroom lectures, field and case studies. This course will benefit law enforcement personnel involved in the investigation or reconstruction of motor vehicle collisions as well as litigators, insurance claims adjusters and engineers interested in collision reconstruction.

Prerequisites: Students should have completed at least the 4 weeks of MVCI On Scene and Advanced Courses or their equivalent before attending the MVCI Reconstruction Course.
